Neither wins alone. AI is better at generating and organizing phrase ideas quickly, while manual research using Etsy’s own data is better at proving that a phrase has real searches, fair competition, and a genuine fit with your product. The best results come from a hybrid: let AI propose ideas, validate the finalists with Etsy search bar suggestions and Marketplace Insights, and make the final calls yourself.
Every Etsy seller eventually asks the same question: should I let an AI tool write my keywords, or do the research by hand?
The honest answer depends on which part of the job you mean. Keyword research is really five jobs: finding ideas, matching shopper language, checking demand, judging competition, and deciding what is true about your product. AI and manual research are good at different ones.
Manual does not mean slow guesswork. It means a person verifies each phrase against real data and decides what to use.
Here is what we can support, and what we cannot.
Ahrefs notes in its keyword research guide that a chatbot is not very useful for keyword research as a whole, though it can help with finding seed keywords. Other SEO vendors make the same point, warning that numbers from a chatbot can look polished but be made up.
There is also a measured example. In the DEJAN AI test of Gemini volume estimates, Gemini’s monthly volume predictions were compared with real Google Search Console data. By DEJAN’s account, the model got the exact volume tier right only about 35 percent of the time, though it was within one tier nearly 70 percent of the time. The takeaway was to use AI for direction, not precision. That test covered Google queries, not Etsy, so treat it as a caution rather than an Etsy result.
Etsy’s own Marketplace Insights tool shows the number of searches and the number of listings for a term over the last 30 days, along with related terms and trends. Every seller gets 15 free keyword searches a week, and each result stays available for 7 days (Etsy Help: Marketplace Insights).
Etsy says its search takes a holistic view of your listing, including title, tags, attributes, descriptions, first photo, and reviews (How Etsy Search Works). It also says listing engagement, meaning how many people view a listing and then buy, influences placement. A phrase that attracts the wrong shopper can therefore work against you.
| Task | AI-assisted | Manual with real data | Better approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brainstorming phrase ideas | Fast and broad. Suggests angles you may not think of. | Limited by your own vocabulary and time. | AI first |
| Matching how shoppers type | Guesses from general language patterns. | Etsy search bar suggestions show real shopper wording. | Manual |
| Estimating demand | No access to Etsy search data. Numbers can be invented. | Marketplace Insights shows searches over 30 days. | Manual |
| Judging competition | Cannot see live listing counts. | Marketplace Insights shows the number of listings. | Manual |
| Clustering and removing duplicates | Good at grouping large lists by theme and intent. | Slow on long lists. | AI first, then review |
| Judging fit and honesty | Does not know your product. May add claims you cannot make. | You know the materials, size, and limits. | Manual |
| Writing readable titles | Good at tightening phrasing, if given facts. | Slower, but accurate. | Hybrid |
| Fitting tag limits | Can miscount characters. | Etsy requires 20 characters or fewer per tag. | Manual check |
| Speed on many listings | Strong for shops with large catalogs. | Time-consuming. | AI draft, human edit |
Breadth. A good prompt can produce dozens of angles across materials, recipients, occasions, and styles in a minute. Etsy’s own tagging guide encourages exactly this kind of variety, grouping ideas into descriptive, materials and techniques, who it is for, occasions, solutions, style, and size (Keywords 101).
Organization. AI is useful for sorting a messy list into themes and spotting near-duplicates. Etsy advises making all 13 tags as unique as possible, so removing repeats matters.
Drafting. Etsy offers an optional AI-powered tool that suggests new listing titles from your current title, first photo, and description, available from the search visibility dashboard for eligible English listings. Treat the output as a draft to approve or edit.
Here is a prompt that plays to AI’s strengths without asking for numbers:
Demand and competition. Marketplace Insights is built for this. Etsy says you can find related terms with high buyer interest but a lower number of listings, which is the closest thing Etsy offers to a “low-competition” signal.
Real shopper wording. Typing a seed into Etsy’s search bar shows how shoppers naturally finish the phrase. AI can only guess.
Truthfulness. Etsy says descriptors must be accurate and follow its policies, and it prohibits mislabeling. An AI that has never held your product may suggest “waterproof,” “organic,” or “hypoallergenic” when you cannot back it up. Only you can approve those words.
Your own results. Etsy suggests checking your Shop Stats traffic details for the search terms already bringing buyers. No AI tool has that without access to your data.
The simple rule: AI proposes, data disposes, and you decide.
| Step | Method | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Seed | AI assistant plus your own product facts | 40 to 60 raw phrase ideas |
| 2. Real-language check | Etsy search bar suggestions | Phrases shoppers actually type |
| 3. Cluster | AI groups by intent, material, recipient, occasion | Themed groups with duplicates removed |
| 4. Shortlist | You cut anything inaccurate or off-brand | 15 to 20 honest phrases |
| 5. Validate | Marketplace Insights (15 free searches a week) | Searches and listing counts for finalists |
| 6. Place | You write title, tags, and attributes | A complete, accurate listing |
| 7. Review | Shop Stats search terms after a few weeks | Keep, change, or drop each phrase |
Because the free Marketplace Insights allowance is limited, the early steps exist to protect it. Do not spend a search on a phrase you have not already cleaned up and approved.
Since no public Etsy benchmark exists, you can learn what works for your niche. Etsy itself says every shop is different, so this is worth doing.
Be careful with conclusions. Seasonality, photos, price, reviews, and customer service all affect results, so one small test shows a pattern, not proof.
Use AI for a 20-minute brainstorm, then validate only your top phrases for each new product.
Use AI to draft and group at scale, then have a person approve titles and tags before they go live.
Use AI to explore niches and themes, then verify demand and listing counts before you create designs.
Build a shared sheet and a review checklist so AI drafts and human checks follow the same process for every client. This mirrors the human-plus-automation approach in our AI chatbot vs live chat comparison.

Neither is best alone. AI is faster at generating and grouping ideas, while manual research with Etsy’s own data is better at confirming demand, competition, and accuracy. A hybrid process gives you the strengths of both.
Not reliably. Chat assistants do not have access to Etsy’s search data, and numbers they produce can be invented. Use Etsy’s Marketplace Insights, which shows searches and listings for the last 30 days.
Every seller gets 15 free Marketplace Insights keyword searches per week, and results stay available for 7 days. Etsy Plus subscribers can search without a weekly limit.
It is an optional tool that suggests titles from your current title, first photo, and description, for eligible English listings. Review each suggestion for accuracy and readability, and check keywords against real data before accepting.
Etsy’s published ranking factors focus on relevancy, listing quality, customer service, and engagement, and do not describe a bonus or penalty for AI-assisted writing. What matters is that the content is accurate, relevant, and appeals to buyers.
Only as a rough direction. In DEJAN’s Gemini test on Google queries, the model often landed in the right ballpark but rarely hit the exact volume tier. That was not an Etsy test, so verify anything important in Etsy’s own tool.
The question is not AI or manual. It is which job each one should do. Let AI widen your list and tidy it up. Let real Etsy data decide which phrases deserve a place in your tags. Keep the final judgment about what is true and appealing about your product for yourself.
Run the small test on one product this month, and let your own Shop Stats settle the argument.
